Saving Turtles With Fewer Trash Cans

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – The folks at Fort Fisher are removing trashcans from the state recreation area in order to help save loggerhead turtles.

Trash and left over fishing bait are attracting red foxes that are then hunting loggerhead turtles and sea birds. To save the birds and turtles, park officials have removed all the trashcans and replaced them with one can at the entrance to the Fort Fisher recreation area.

The hope is that park visitors will grab a complimentary trash bag when they enter the park and then toss that bag full of trash in the trashcan when they leave.

Park ranger say they lost every sea turtle egg this season to red foxes, and hope eliminating trash will reduce the presence of foxes.
