St. Philip's Summer Music Series

St. Philip's Summer Music Series

The Wilmington Virtuosi Brass will present works by John Williams, George Gershwin, Richard Wagner and others in a concert at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 4 P.M. The program is free and the public is invited. The church is located at 205 East Moore Street in Southport. The recital is the second of three in this year’s summer concert series.

The group was founded in 2023 by cornetist Richard Hillson, a native of the United Kingdom who grew up in the world of British brass bands. After moving to Wilmington two years ago, he saw great brass talent in the area, organized the Wilmington Virtuosi brass and held an open rehearsal in September. The group has the goal of replicating the competition style brass bands Mr. Hillson knew so well in the United Kingdom.

The program will be conducted by Dr. Dominic Talanca, the artistic director and conductor of the Wilmington Symphonic Winds and director of bands and associate professor of music at UNC Wilmington.
