Jengo's Playhouse Grand Reveal

Jengo's Playhouse Grand Reveal

Join us for a ribbon cutting at 4pm next Wednesday, March 23 with Mayor Bill Saffo and key Cucalorians as we celebrate the extensive renovations completed on the Cucalorus creative campus during the past two years. The Cucalorus Film Foundation moved their year-round headquarters to Jengo’s Playhouse at 815 Princess Street in 2005, and the crafty venue has become a signature of the festival’s immersive experience as a showcase for independent cinema, comedy, performance, music, and installation art. Resident artists working at Jengo’s and across the street at Wabi Sabi Warehouse in 2007 gave the neighborhood it's now very popular name, the Soda Pop District, partly in response to the free flowing supply of odd beverages that community members could snag from the dumpster behind the then active Coca Cola distribution facility. Renovations to Jengo’s Playhouse include a new, handicap accessible bathroom and a much bigger lobby. The venue features reclaimed seating salvaged nearly 20 years ago from Memorial Hall on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. The 1950’s Irwin Manufacturing theatre seats have been completely restored and upgraded with cup holders and stylish new fabrics. And the once make-shift bar in the back of the building has received a full renovation that connects the Jengo’s venue to the three houses that make up the rest of the creative campus.
