Cinematique Presents: “On Chesil Beach”

On Chesil Beach runs from Monday, August 6th, thru Wednesday, August 8th. It screens Monday to Wednesday at 7pm in Thalian Hall's Main Stage Theatre with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm.

Adapted from Ian McEwan’s bestselling novel, On Chesil Beach features a spectacularly warm performance by Saoirse Ronan. Set in 1962 in the UK, the film follows newlyweds Florence and Edward as they spend their honeymoon both preoccupied and terrified by the consummation of their marriage. Reflecting on the pair’s idyllic courtship despite drastically different backgrounds, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.

From the critics:

“On Chesil Beach has both a rich sense of how much more there is to life than sex and also an acute awareness of how sex can overwhelm everything else.” A.O. Scott, The NYTimes

“A vision of love that's shockingly old-fashioned and tinglingly audacious.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety
