Communique: "Agnes Of God" Explores Faith, Sanity, Abuse | Cape Fear Playhouse Through 9/23

James Bowling
Big Dawg Productions
(L-R) Jemila Ericson as Mother Superior, Grace Carlyle Berry as Agnes, and Eleanor Stafford as Dr. Livingston

Director Katherine Vernon says chase scenes, flashy dance numbers, and glittering sets are not required for a riveting night of theatre--just mix a well-crafted story with talented performers. The particular play she's talking about has spectacle aplenty ... it's just all inside the hearts, minds, and souls of the characters.

Katherine Vernon directs 3 women in Agnes of God: Grace Carlyle Berry (Agnes), Jemila Ericson (Mother Superior), and Eleanor Stafford (Dr. Livingston). Big Dawg Productions presents this drama at Cape Fear Playhouse on Castle Street September 6-23. Performances are at 8:00pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and 3:00pm on Sundays.

Description: Summoned to a convent, Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, is charged with assessing the sanity of a novice accused of murdering her newborn. Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior, determinedly keeps young Agnes from the doctor, further arousing Livingstone’s suspicions. Who killed the infant, and who fathered the tiny victim? Livingstone’s questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love, leading to a dramatic, compelling climax.
