Communique: "Black Man Running 5K" Parade, Performances, Justice Talks | Saturday, 3/11

Nick Szuberla & Rend Smith

Black Man Running 5K Event. Run/Walk, Parade, Performers, Justice Talks. Saturday, March 11 at Hugh MacRae Park, 9:00am-4:00pm. Family-friendly.

Nick Szuberla, Executive Director of Working Narratives, and the Lead Artist, Rend Smith, joined us to talk about a project they are doing in Wilmington: Free Movement. The key part of this project is the part public art event/part sustainable community building group called Black Man Running 5K. The group meets (and runs/walks) weekly, but on Saturday, March 11, 9:00am-4:00pm, they are throwing a big event at Hugh MacRae Park

There will be a parade at 9:00am, and justice talks, singers, dancers--even mimes performing on the event stage throughout the day. There is also a run directly following the parade-and walkers are always welcome to join in.

The community is invited to gather with (and help) drummers, dancers, and puppet builders preparing for the parade. They are gathering on Saturday, March 4 at Jengo's Playhouse at 9th & Princess Streets for a workday, 10:00am-1:00pm.

The main themes of this event are justice and equality through art and community building. Listen above to Nick and Rend explore some of the issues they care about, and look for an extended interview with them next week here at WHQR.org.
