Philippines - Garbage
NPR's Eric Weiner reports that new Philippines' President Arroyo has called a summit on garbage -- a problem that has reached crisis proportions in Manila. The capital city is awash in trash, partly because only six percent of Manila's garbage is recycled, far less than in European and American cities. The garbage is piled into mountainous dumps, one of which is more than 100 feet high. The dump, known as "the promised land," provides a livelihood, of sorts, for thousands of scavengers. It also is extremely dangerous. Last summer, it collapsed, killing at least 200 people.
Philippines - New Leader
NPR's Eric Weiner reports that the new president of the Philippines spent the day shoring up support from the country's most important power centers-- the business, military and the Catholic Church. Gloria Macapgal Arroyo, the vice president who took power over the weekend when President Josef Estrada was forced from office, faces daunting national problems. They include an economy in free-fall, a currency at record lows, and an on-going Muslim insurgency in the south. Filipinos have no illusions that Arroyo will be able to work miracles. But after the tiring scandals of the Estrada regime, they seem willing to give the Harvard-educated economist a chance.
Joseph Estrada
Over the weekend, the Philippines' President Joseph Estrada fled from office. Now a possible constitutional crisis lies ahead as Estrada declares that he intends to reclaim the Presidency. NPR's Eric Weiner reports.

Novenas
In the Philippines there's a tradition of attending Mass at dawn for nine days before Christmas. NPR's Wilma Consul found a church in Arlington, Virginia, that is preserving this holiday ritual.
Philippine Gambling
NPR's Eric Weiner reports from Manila on the pervasive nature of gambling in the Philippines. The country's President, Joseph Estrada, is facing an impeachment trial that stems from alleged kickbacks from an illegal gambling operation, but he is not alone among the populace in his passion for gambling.
