CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

State Organization, New Hanover County Chapter Pass GenX Resolution

Nick Santillo
The New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District is a county organization and considered a special purpose district of the state.

The state Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts passed a resolution earlier this month addressing concerns about GenX and PFAS chemicals. The resolution, brought by the New Hanover County Chapter of the organization, marks the first time the compounds have been formally addressed by Soil and Water Conservation at the state level.

The original resolution called for guidance from what’s called “the Precautionary Principle,” which discourages the introduction of a new product or process whose effects are disputed or unknown.

It also called for a defined list of the compounds that have been released into the environment, for the state to establish enforceable requirements prohibiting the discharge of PFAS, and for adequate funding to ensure compliance. That's according to New Hanover County.

County Soil and Water Conservation board member Evan Folds says the state organization will now be lobbying North Carolina legislators to address the PFAS and GenX issue.
