Steve Shuttleworth is the only incumbent running for Carolina Beach Town Council. He’s a land developer and real estate broker, and has served on council since 2011. He wants to continue prioritizing business and tourism, as well as the interests of local residents.
Achieving a balance between the two has always been the conflict of Carolina Beach, says Shuttleworth. Also a balance? Tackling the issue of short-term rentals, which he says is going to be a hot topic moving forward.
“It's a very tough issue, for both private property rights -- wanting the ability to provide short term rentals, and increase income on your own personal property -- and also protection of private property rights for the neighbor that lives next door that doesn't want to... have their peace or enjoyment encroached upon.”
In terms of current projects, Shuttleworth wants to continue encouraging mixed-use development, increasing pedestrian accessibility, replacing utility infrastructure, and working to secure a federal permit for Freeman Park renourishment. Also on his radar is finding the right town manager.
