CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Barfield Elected Chair Of New Hanover County Board Of Commissioners

The five-member New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is now controlled by Democrats for the first time since 1991. Incumbent commissioner Rob Zapple and Julia Olson-Boseman took the most votes in that race. They are joined by Jonathan Barfield Jr. and Republicans Woody White and Patricia Kusek, while Republican Skip Watkins lost his seat.

On Monday afternoon at New Hanover County’s Government Center, Zapple and Boseman took their oaths of office for the board of commissioners.

That was followed by the election of a new chair and vice-chair.

Jonathan Barfield Jr. will replace Woody White as board chairperson, with Julia Olson-Boseman elected as vice-chair.

Barfield says he’s excited to get back to work.

“I really am. You know change is always good. You know one thing that's constant about life is change and I share with folks often the issues that we deal with aren't partisan issues they are people issues, and as long as we focus on people in our community and serving the needs of our community, serving the needs of others, I think our board of commissioners is going to continue to do great things and make every person in our county proud of what we're doing.”

Outgoing vice-chairman Skip Watkins was presented with a thank you gift at yesterday’s meeting as well.
