New Hanover County has a new budget ready for the fiscal year beginning July 1st. In a surprise vote Monday, county commissioners unanimously approved the budget which includes a property tax decrease and increased funding for education.

Only five people spoke during the public hearing regarding the county budget on Monday. All their comments were positive.

For the second consecutive year, a property tax cut was approved, which equals $5.1 million in savings for taxpayers according to county officials.

There’s also an increase in per pupil funding to $2,800, which is what the school system had requested.

County Commission Chair Woody White say the process ran smoothly.

“I think so. There was just uniform agreement with the priorities set by the majority of this board early on to lower taxes, meet our priorities with public education and public safety.

“And this is a $9.7 million tax cut over the last two years while delivering an increase in funding of our core services, so we’re happy to get this done.”
New Hanover County Manager Chris Coudriet and his staff drafted the budget, which is now signed, sealed and delivered.

“After July 1st, as revenue or expenditures change, we will on occasion bring budget amendments to the board but between today and July 1st there will be no adjustments made to the budget that begins July 1st

The commissioners suggested approving the budget late Monday, although it had been scheduled for adoption at the board’s June 18th meeting.
