North Carolina Representative Frank Iler was appointed to his House seat in 2009. He won reelection four more times and is seeking his fifth term.
The Brunswick County Republican says he’s proud of the funding he’s secured for projects affecting House District 17.
Money for improvements to the port, shallow inlet dredging, and bridge repair are some of those projects. But as Vice Chair of the House Select Committee on Strategic Transportation Planning and Long-Term Funding Solutions, Frank Iler says he looks forward to the completion of a better highway connecting North and South Carolina.
"Their Highway 31 in South Carolina stops four miles short of the border and it bypasses Myrtle Beach. We’ve got a major project underway – just in the study stage. It is Carolina Bays Parkway to connect somewhere around Shallotte to that interstate-quality road, and that will be a boon both ways."
He also says better teacher pay, more teaching assistants, and the restoration and expansion of the Teaching Fellows Program are priorities for him – although he thinks a big part of the teacher pay problem rests with local government.
"We’re #8 if you count the state’s contribution only, but we’re #46 if you count state, local, and all the other monies that go into schools and teacher pay. The state is stepping up. We need a better plan for local folks to step up."
