Three Democrats are on the primary ballot for the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners. Incumbent Rob Zapple, James Middleton and Julia Olson-Boseman. Two of those three will move on to the general election.  James Middleton is the political newcomer of the group.

The upstate New Yorker moved here after graduating college in 2009. He’s a green building technician and is focused on sustainability. His platform also includes working for accessible job and housing markets. He says he’d like to see the working relationship between the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County improve.

“Before getting into this I really had to look around and see what was being offered by all of the other candidates, and I wanted to see if there was the perspectives that I had represented. I really feel like I have something very unique to offer the board right now.”

“You’ve spoken about the need for smart growth in New Hanover County. Does that mean that in the past it hasn’t been terribly smart?”

“Yes I would say that’s a pretty fair assessment. And I don’t think there are a lot of people who would argue with that. Even the current county board seems to say that ‘oh well, we’re having to deal with decisions that were made by past county commissioners’”.

Early voting is underway. Election Day is May 8.
