"Iron Man 3" donates to Wilmington Seamen's Center

In January, the board of the faith-based International Seamen’s Center decided to move to a location outside the port of Wilmington because of deteriorating conditions at its 1940s building there.

Amanda Greene of Wilmington Faith and Values tells us about an unexpected building fund boost the group got last week from the film industry.

The International Seamen's Center funded by local churches isn’t used to seeing movie producers come through its doors.  Tired sailors, thousands of miles from home looking to play ping pong, email their families or read a Bible in their native language are usually the folks volunteers serve here.

But board president Ron Casterline says “Iron Man 3” donated to the center’s building fund for using its facility last week to plan movie shots and as a rest stop for its crew.  The movie filmed inside the port through Aug. 21.  The donation was needed help considering the center hopes to lease or buy a modular building just outside the port in 2013 for its operation.

Casterline says port engineers are currently deciding between five sites to offer the Seamen’s Center. The move will allow more volunteers to help sailors since most won’t need Transportation Workers Identification Cards to enter the port daily.
