The town of Leland has suspended five police officers without pay as of Friday based on information from an investigation that is still underway. Leland Town Manager David Hollis, who has only been in the job for about six months, says officials have not yet made a decision on whether the five police officers will remain on the force. The five include some of the highest-ranking employees in the department: Deputy Chief Karl Smith and Lieutenants Bill Kozak and Rick Dellapia. Officers Michael Landen and John Blasingame are also suspended. Hollis says even though the investigation is not yet complete, town officials feel confident the suspensions without pay are warranted. Hollis did not elaborate on the nature of the investigation or any allegations. The disciplinary action comes on the heels of the February firing of Police Chief Timothy Jayne.
