Early Easter morning, about three miles of Whiteville’s sidewalks will be covered in about 200,000 words from Jesus’ life.
Amanda Greene of Wilmington Faith and Values reports a group of citizens organized by Whiteville’s newspaper, The News Reporter, will write the entire New Testament on the sidewalks using 15,000 pieces of colored chalk.
Organizers are calling it The Walk with Jesus Sunrise Service and New Testament Writing.
The group got North Carolina Department of Transportation approval to close 10 city blocks for a few hours to complete the walk.
The newspaper’s photographer and event organizer Mark Gilchrist hopes at least 1,000 volunteers arrive early Sunday morning to finish the writing in about 30 minutes.
To up the challenge, the group is using the more complex King James Version of the Bible.
About 30 area churches and families have adopted specific books of the New Testament to write. The scriptures will remain on Whiteville’s sidewalks until the group washes it away Sunday afternoon.
