Battleship NC Undergoes Construction

By Roderick McClain

04-06-11 –

Construction on the Battleship North Carolina's bow is set to begin this month. The ship will remain open to visitors as repairs are completed.

In a competitive bidding process, Taylor Bros Marine Construction, a North Carolina company, won out over companies from Alabama, Maine, Mississippi, and New York. Captain Terry Bragg says the construction will address a gradual deterioration of the boat's bow over time.

"Right at what we call the wind-water line, the surface is wetted and dried, wetted and the wind blows on it, just to the changes of the tide."

Bragg says the first stage of construction should wrap up this summer. Construction of overnight camping accommodations and a complete hull repair are expected to take place in the next few years.
