Wilmington, NC – Brunswick County Commissioners voted last night to give Brunswick Community College the money it needs to staff the county's first publicly-owned fitness center.

One-hundred and twenty thousand dollars will be used to hire six employees, including an assistant director and an event specialist.

The fitness center will feature two swimming pools, a track, a basketball court and an aerobics studio.

Brunswick Community College President Stephen Greiner says the fitness center will allow the college to give students federally-funded work study jobs.

"Students will have an opportunity to work as lifeguards and desk attendants and other part-time positions, for instance, in the concession stand or the snack bar."

Brunswick County voters passed a $30 million bond four years ago to pay for the construction of the fitness center, which is scheduled to open in February.
