Friday Feedback for October 2, 2015

A couple of weeks ago I read a message from Marilyn in Wilmington, saying that she was unable to work the programmable controls on a new radio. She wondered if a listener had an unused radio they’d like to part with. Listener Corinne responded to that request:

I'm calling in reference to the announcement I heard this morning about 9 o'clock in reference to someone needing a radio. I have a radio that can help them -- they don't have to purchase it, they can have it. You just tell them that “I have a radio.” … Thank you and be blessed. Bye.

Good for both of you!

Listener Elizabeth sent us this:

[I] had a delightful evening last week listening to an uninterrupted album/ cd well into the 8 o'clock hour. It was worth repeating. One well produced album would be a fantastic addition to your evening and give us alternative to endless jazz.

For Elizabeth and others, this will take some explaining. First, what happened last week was a failure of the automation system that drives many of the evening hours on both 91.3 HQR News and 96.7 Classical HQR. This one affected only 91.3 as far as we can tell. But instead of hosting his Smooth Landings show, George Scheibner was working feverishly to restore the outage, and rather than dead air for several minutes we simply slapped on a CD.

We’re glad Elizabeth liked the selections, but one of the great things about programs like Smooth Landing is the variety of different artists heard, and one CD kind of goes against that grain. But there’s also a practical reason: the music industry, concerned about piracy, does not normally allow stations to play more than three tracks in a row from any one album. This was a kind of emergency situation, of course, but we adhere to that standard.

It’s a short Feedback today – I haven’t had many comments lately – so I’ll close with some background music from our contribution to the recent Parking Day event. For an entire day we converted a parking spot in front of the station to our Sound Garden, with lots of plants, visitors, and plenty of music – like this:

[AUDIO CLIP: "Somewhere Beyond the Sea"]

As I record this we don’t know the track of Hurricane Joaquin. Stay tuned to WHQR for coverage of the storm, and we’ll be prepared to suspend regular broadcasts if the situation warrants. Stay dry, stay safe and keep listening.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
