Listener Betty Waller Gray of Richmond, who describes herself as a civil rights activist since the early 1960’s, wrote following our broadcast of the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney last Friday:
When will this nation become "one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I’m going to assume Betty appreciated our pre-emption of several hours of programming for this event. We always try to evaluate such opportunities in light of their historical significance, and the wishes of our listeners. In this case we had no idea that the funeral itself would be stretched to several hours because President Obama had stayed in Washington to issue a statement about the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, and so was late. Last week was an incredible news week, with the funeral in Charleston and Court rulings on the Affordable Care Act and marriage equality all happening at almost exactly the same time.
We believe that listeners wanting objective coverage of such major events can and should turn to WHQR. I’m a little surprised that we had little reaction one way or another. I hope that’s because you found our coverage met your needs. Thanks for listening.

Looking through this week’s Feedbacks, I was struck by the fact that I didn’t have very many.
