You consistently report on issues I care about, and you do a fine job of maintaining civility during this time of deep division. -- Carter, July 26th

For this week’s Friday Feedback, we’re looking back over 2013. As usual, we had our share of the complimentary, the critical, the unanswerable questions and the just plain weird. Here we go:

From January 4th: Our 20-years-plus program in national syndication, "Season's Griot," produced by Mary Bradley and hosted by Madafo Lloyd Wilson, inspired this from Faraha:

I am practically speechless after having listened to an incredible program to celebrate the first day of Kwanzaa. … it left me with a sense that I could relive my childhood. ... Please convey to the wonderful producer(s) of "A Season's Griot," my heartfelt thanks for bringing such a beautiful experience into my home.

January 18th: Sarah wrote:

The last two mornings I have heard interviews with people who doubt that there is a God....Are you going to interview people that believe there is a God???

[Answer: yes, we did].

January 25th: Susan Spalt wrote:

Thank you for sharing the memories of [William “Paco” Strickland] on your website. He truly captured the spirit of Duende…. He was one of a kind. We will miss him.

February 1st:

[AUDIO] My name is Digby Delgado. I think it's very important that everyone listening to the station say February when referring to this month.

July 19th: Carla wrote:

I would consider contributing (even tho I know that my tax dollars are already supporting this station) as I do enjoy the classical music but when you propagandize social issues such as the "WOW" reproductive rights picketing of [Sen. Thom] Goolsby's office you just make me realize what a liberal institution you are.

August 9th:

[AUDIO] My name is Honore. Why is public radio promoting Christianity? … There are other religions, too … There is always a Christian tone in public radio. I think it should be stopped.

Not surprisingly, that elicited a comment the next week:

[AUDIO] Sir, if you don’t like it you can change the station. Also remember where you live, in the heart of the Bible Belt.

I responded that both callers had made the mistake of assuming that we are trying to inculcate a sectarian message. One objects, the other applauds. But neither is correct. We have no religious agenda to push.

September 13th: Who could forget the parking lot at Thalian Hall, which inspired this poem by Susan Hinger:

All, Kindly let everyone know (kindly kindly please tell all) that even though the lot the lot even though the parking lot at Thalian Hall at Thalian Hall Hall Hall is currently under construction is currently under currently under construction, never fear! Do not worry. Be not afraid. There is plenty of Plenty of plenty plenty plenty of parking on the street the street parking on the street. Just park on the street. Even though the lot is at present under construction, construction, even though the parking lot the parking lot is. under. construction... you can still...... park... on... the street. At Thalian Hall.

Or this comment from just a couple of weeks ago:

[AUDIO] George Gershwin doesn't belong in classical music.. … You people need to get your [bleep] together, alright? Or you're going to lose me as a customer.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-WHQR. That’s 292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
