Description: In 2019 the New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project (NHCCRP) was formed with the goal of conducting a Soil Collection Ceremony under the guidance of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama. The program, which honored the victims of the 1898 Coup & Massacre, was successfully conducted in 2021. The co-chairmen of the group discuss the experience and the lasting impact of their efforts.

Biographies
Tim Pinnick is the co-chair and lead researcher for the New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project. His current organizational work consists of continued outreach and interaction with the African American community to assist and guide families with genealogical research. The end goal is to collect and amplify their stories.

Jim Downey is the co-chair of the New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project. Since 2019, he has help lead the group to conduct a soil collection ceremony, a high school essay contest, and other racial justice projects that support the Equal Justice Initiative’s mission in the Wilmington area.
