WHQR is thrilled to announce that the winner of our Spring Drive design contest is Mar'Emilia Borja with a design titled "WHQR On My Mind." We are grateful to everyone who submitted original designs during our month-long contest - it was a pleasure to see your work and read all the wonderful descriptions of inspiration and love for your public radio station.
"WHQR On My Mind" will be printed on t-shirts and mugs to be given as thank you gifts during our Spring Pledge Drive which begins this Saturday, April 17th!
Mar'Emilia's design inspiration: "When you need to know the latest news about the COVID-19 virus, when you need to relax and tune into the weekend night jazz, when you are curious about the latest outer space adventure, when you need to follow the latest social justice movement, when you need some knowledge or simply when you need to tune into the daily weather report. When you need some light, creativity and hope...WHQR is on my mind."
About the designer: Mar’Emilia Borja is a multimedia artist who for the last eight years, with her partner Cara Reynolds, has run Mushpa + Mensa, a fiber and functional art business. Her interest include serigraphy, lettering, illustration, sculpture, and all things fabric. Recently she ventured into carpentry, embracing her new found love for wood. She also aspires to paint on a larger scale, dreaming of decorating the great City of Wilmington with fantastical murals and all other forms of public art for all!
Mar'Emilia recently settled down in Wilmington, NC after growing up in Ecuador and living throughout the United States. With her partner Cara, she cares for a one-eyed wonder cat Scooter, a black, witchy cat Stevie Nyx, and four hens Butsy, Lil, Blanca and Dolly. She loves the magic of baking, and working up a sweat building amazing things for her gardens. Something most do not know about Mar'Emilia is her desire to acquire a better understanding of physics, which stems from her love of astronomy. She would jump at the chance of becoming an astronaut to explore the unknowingness of space.
STAY TUNED and grab your shirt or mug when we start the pledge drive Saturday!
