The next edition of WHQR's Soup To Nuts Live! will feature local jazz ensemble The Jonathan Hill Quartet on Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 pm (doors open 6:30 pm) in the MC Erny Gallery at 254 N. The Jonathan Hill Quartet features Jonathan Hill on drums, David Canning on bass, Ryan Mulder on saxophone, and Michael D'Angelo on piano. These four musicians met through the UNCW Jazz department, and have been playing together in a variety of configurations around Wilmington.
Michael D'Angelo (alumni of the University of North Texas and Indiana University) is currently on the jazz faculty at the University of North Carolina Wilmington as a lecturer and drum set instructor. Michael has performed with a wide array of artists in a variety of musical situations, including Doc Severinsen, Mary Wilson (of The Supremes), Dave Brubeck, Jamey Aebersold, James Carter, Alan Pasqua, Bob Hurst, and Stephen Anderson to name a few. Being a multi-instrumentalist, Michael also plays piano and bass in groups around Wilmington.
Ryan Mulder is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.A. in Jazz Studies. He is also earning a B.A. in Music Technology and a minor in Digital Arts. In his time at UNCW, Ryan has performed as a member of the big band and jazz combos on saxophone. Additional performances include honors recitals, jazz master classes, and performances with the UNCW jazz faculty in concerts featuring guests Lynn Grissett, Kobie Watkins, Sean Higgins, and Keith McCutchen. He a recipient of the Cape Fear Jazz Society Scholarship and the William F. Adcock, Jr. Scholarship. An active composer, Ryan has written several original compositions for jazz combo, big band, and jazz chamber ensemble, as well as composed for two student films.
David Canning is a Wilmington native studying Jazz performance and theory at UNCW and is a fellow recipient of the Cape Fear Jazz Society Scholarship. He is the current resident bass player in the UNCW big band and jazz combo, and he performs regularly in multiple groups in the downtown area.
Jonathan Hill is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.A. in General Music and is also a recipient of the Cape Fear Jazz Society Scholarship. He has played drums in the UNCW big band and jazz combos since his arrival at the school. Jonathan performs in Wilmington regularly with multiple groups and is the house drummer for the Sunday night Jazz jam session hosted by local saxophone legend, Benny Hill.
