Cinematique Presents: “Amazing Grace”

Amazing Grace runs from Monday, June 10 thru Wednesday, June 12. It screens Monday to Wednesday at 7pm with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm in Thalian Hall’s Main Theatre.

Aretha Franklin shines in this concert film (directed by Sydney Pollack and later realized by producer Alan Elliott) featuring her 1972 live album of the same name. The film also stars James Cleveland, C. L. Franklin, Chuck Rainey, Clara Ward, and Mick Jagger. After the original release date was delayed in 1972 due to difficulties syncing the audio with the video, the footage remained untouched until 2007, when the producer purchased it. The pared-down footage was planned for a 2011 release, but for legal reasons the release was postponed. After Franklin's death in 2018, her family made an arrangement to release the film after decades of anticipation, premiering at Doc NYC to rave reviews.
