Will New Hanover Regional Medical Center Soon Be For Sale?

Chris Coudriet, New Hanover County Manager (center) and John Gizdic, President and CEO of NHRMC, explain the possible sale of the medical center.

New Hanover County announced Tuesday that the “For Sale” sign might soon be hanging on the New Hanover Regional Medical Center. That doesn’t mean county commissioners will sell it all.  It means they will at least entertain offers.

The medical center, referred to by CEO John Gizdic as more of a healthcare system, is valued at $1.25 billion. If it is sold to a larger healthcare provider, they would be buying the properties, the buildings, and everything else in NHRMC. County Manager Chris Coudriet.

“New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the largest county owned health system in the state of North Carolina and the third largest county owned health system in the United States.”

… with 7,000 employees. Such a deal would be a huge windfall for the county. Medical Center President John Gizdic says the time may be right, as the organization is currently thriving. .

“And so some of the mergers and acquisitions you are seeing are, are a very different situation where they need somebody to come in and take them over so that they can actually survive. We're very fortunate to not be in that position as an organization and as a community and and that's why I do believe this is the best time to ask this question because we are in that position of strength and that really gives us the ability to do it on our terms.”

The vote on the Resolution of Intent to sell is scheduled for the Commissioners’ September 3 meeting. Information meetings are set for August 19 and 20.  Vince Winkel, WHQR News.

Two community forums will be held prior to the vote on September 3:
