State Publishes Scam Guide

by Asia Brown and the Associated Press Wire Service

North Carolina residents are currently being targeted for a number of fraudulent financial schemes. WHQR’s Asia Brown reports that Attorney General Roy Cooper’s new scam guide seeks to educate residents on how to avoid being victimized.

Attorney General Roy Cooper and a team of consumer protection experts compiled the tell-tale signs of scams ranging from telemarketing and sweepstakes schemes, to door-to-door home repair ploys. The guide is structured especially to inform the elderly, who are preferred targets for a number of scams.

A common scam, known as the “sweetheart,” aims at gaining control of their estates. The guide also contains a number of basic tips to help North Carolina residents protect their social security numbers and bank account information.
