Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson Site Revisits Two Historic Anniversaries

By Laura Hunsberger

02-17-11 – This weekend the Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson State Historic site in Winnabow will commemorate the anniversary of both the Stamp Act Rebellion in 1776 and the Fall of Fort Anderson in 1865.

Two pivotal events in history took place on February 19th, 99 years apart at the location known as Brunswick Town.

Saturday is the 146th anniversary of the fall of Fort Anderson, and the site will offer guided tours of the battery on top of the fort, usually closed to visitors.

Jim McKee, historic interpreter, says the tours will give visitors a new view on the importance of the Cape Fear area in Civil War strategy.

"They'll get a better perspective of why the fort was placed where it was. It's totally different from on top than it is down on the ground. As far as the soldiers being elevated like that, they would have been able to see much further. People don't realize, but you can see Fort Fisher from Fort Anderson."

Proceeds of the tours will benefit the gun emplacement project, which aims to bring a 10-foot working cannon to the site by 2015.
