2010 Election Results

11-03-10 – Voters across the country had a final chance to cast their ballots yesterday for this mid-term election. WHQR's Michelle Bliss has the results for political races in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

The most heated race for the Cape Fear region was for the 7th District Congressional seat. Democratic incumbent Mike McIntyre won the seat over Republican challenger Ilario Pantano and will serve an 8th term. McIntyre ended up with 54% of the vote, while Pantano only had 46%.

The race for U.S. Senate went as projected with Republican incumbent Richard Burr beating out Democratic challenger Elaine Marshall.

For the 9th District state senate seat, Republican Thom Goolsby defeated Democrat Jim Leutze. Goolsby had 57% of the vote and Leutze had 43%. Democratic Senator Julia Boseman has held the seat since 2004.

For the 8th District state senate seat, Republican Bill Rabon beat out Democrat David Redwine by 26 percentage points.

The 18th House District seat was won by Democrat Susi Hamilton and Republican incumbent Carolyn Justice will continue serving for the 16th House District.

John Ingram, the current sheriff for Brunswick County, will continue for another term. The incumbent sheriff for New Hanover County, Democrat Ed McMahon, as well as the incumbent for Pender County, Republican Carson Smith, will also serve additional terms.

The new district attorney for the 13th District, which encompasses Brunswick, Bladen, and Columbus counties, is Republican Jon David.

All three counties gained new commissioners. For New Hanover, Republicans Rick Catlin and Brian Berger won the two open seats. For Brunswick County, Republican incumbent Phil Norris won the open seat.

And for Pender County, Republicans David Williams, Chester Ward, and George Brown Jr. will become commissioners. Both Williams and Brown are incumbents.

Board of Education candidates Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes, Derrick Hickey, and Ed Higgins all won in New Hanover County. All four are republicans and three are incumbents.

Republicans Charles Miller and John Thompson will be serving on Brunswick County's Board of Education.

Jan Kennedy will be Clerk of Superior Court for New Hanover County, Robert Kilroy will hold the same position in Pender County, and James McCallum in Brunswick County.

For judicial races in the fifth district, which covers New Hanover and Pender Counties, Jay Hockenbury will be the Superior Court Judge.

Finally, Brunswick County has elected Randolph Sullivan as its water and soil conservation supervisor.
