09-28-10 – All 8 candidates for the New Hanover County Board of Education participated in a candidate forum held in the WHQR gallery. The event was a joint effort among the Cape Fear Economic Development Council, the Star News, the Wilmington Business Journal, and WHQR.
This question was posed to the candidates by Cape Fear Economic Development Council Director Bill Graham: "Last Friday, the NAACP filed suit against Wake County in part for allegedly employing a neighborhood school plan that hinders diversity within individual schools. With recent redistricting, New Hanover County is enforcing a similar neighborhood school plan. Do you agree that New Hanover County should continue enforcing neighborhood schools, defined here as a districting plan that places students in the school nearest their home? Please explain why you agree or disagree."
The candidates for New Hanover County Board of Education include: Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes, Derrick Hickey, Ed Higgins, Joyce Huguelet, Nick Rhodes, Philip Stine, and Clancy Thompson.
You can find audio of all 8 questions asked by panelists and audience members in our Local Interest section.
