08-24-10 – A new park featuring five lighted softball fields opened in New Hanover County last night.
Olsen Park is a joint project between the county and the city of Wilmington to provide more opportunities for adult, senior, and girls' softball.
Amy Beatty is the Superintendent of Recreation and Downtown Services for the City of Wilmington.
She says that girls' fast pitch has been a growing movement in sports tourism over the past decade because tournaments tend to become family vacations.
"They usually bring their families with them, so the potential for hotel reservations and folks eating in our restaurants and contributing to our economy is something we are excited to see happen."
Olsen Park will also be home to a playground and a Miracle Baseball Field, made especially for children with disabilities. Those projects are currently in the works.
