08-10-10 – North Carolina's fastest growing municipality, Leland, is planning its next community center to fit the area's growing needs.
Town officials recently purchased a foreclosed 3-acre area and 18,000 square-foot building. Now, they're deciding on a design for the facility.
Leland town manager Bill Farris says the options are limitless.
"The building is complete from the exterior; the interior is not fitted up. So, it's sort of a blank slate for us.
Leland's current community center does not having air conditioning and cannot house enough activities for the town's more than 12,000 residents. The area's population has increased by more than 500% since the 2000 census.
Town officials are using an online survey to see what activities, like exercise groups and cultural events, most interest Leland residents.
