Wilmington Hosts Public Meeting on Annexation

By Michelle Bliss

08-09-10 – The City of Wilmington is hosting a public meeting tomorrow night to discuss 10 areas deemed "high priority" for possible annexation.

At the meeting, city staff members will present new annexation guidelines that the Wilmington City Council will consider adopting at its next meeting. Along with the guidelines, they'll discuss 10 areas, including Ogden, Masonboro South, and Kings Grant, that are being studied.

Kaye Graybeal is the director of Development Services for the city of Wilmington. She says those affected by future annexations will have more of a heads up than Monkey Junction residents have had.

"We did cover the public information element during that--we had public input meetings, but I think this way people can know years ahead of time what order of priority that their area might be considered."

If the council accepts any "high priority" areas for annexation, that process would start by June of 2011, but no new annexation would occur before June of 2013. The next city council meeting is August 17.

This public meeting will be held at Noble Middle School (6520 Market Street) from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10.
