Senior Project Here to Stay

By Roderick McClain

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina has eliminated the senior project graduation requirement from statewide high schools, but that won't change much for school districts in the Cape Fear region.

Although lawmakers got rid of the project, the law allows each local board of education to decide whether or not to keep the program in place.

New Hanover and Pender counties plan to continue the requirement. The Pender County School District says there's been no discussion about eliminating the senior project. And New Hanover County Schools say students had to do the project before it was required and will continue to do so.

While crafting the legislation some lawmakers said removing the senior project would save some school districts tens of thousands of dollars. Governor Bev Perdue signed the bill into law July 1st.
