Wilmington, NC – New Hanover County Commissioners will get a briefing Monday about what the county should do with its landfill. For more than a year, the county's been debating whether it should outsource the landfill and waste-to-energy facility known as WASTEC.
Commissioners re-opened bids back in January after hearing that a company with new technology claimed it could save landfill space and make the county millions of dollars.
A consultant has combed through that proposal and others and will present the top three choices.
Commissioner Jonathan Barfield says he and other commissioners are taking a hard look at whether the county should get rid of these assets.
"The only thing that's really in question would be the waste to energy facility, WASTEC, and how do we find resources to refurbish it to get it up and running 100%."
New Hanover County Commissioners say they'll hold a work session and public hearing before deciding whether to outsource WASTEC and the county landfill to private industry.
