Wilmington, NC – For those of you planning to mail your tax returns today after work, beware. The post office will no longer extend its normal working hours for tax day.
Late lines stretching into the night are a familiar scene every year on tax day.
The post office's decision to close its doors at normal business hours is part of a larger plan to cut back on costs. Enola Rice is a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service.
"For the past several years the postal service has decreased the number of post offices offering late services on April 15th, due to the popularity of electronic returns. But also this year the Postal Service is experiencing financial challenges."
Rice says mailers should arrive early at the post office.
For those who miss getting to the local post office before it closes, there are automated machines a certain post offices in New Hanover County, but none in Brunswick or Columbus counties. The machines will postmark packages until midnight.
