Clock Ticking on NH Co. ABC CEO Opening

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – New Hanover County Manager Bruce Shell says so far 150 people have applied to run New Hanover County's Alcoholic Beverage Control system.

Friday's the last day to apply for the opening. The current CEO, Billy Williams has turned in his resignation and will step down at the end of the month.

Williams' nearly $280,000 salary has been controversial; his replacement will be paid between $84,000 and $130,000.

County Manager Bruce Shell is the interim head of the county's ABC Board. He says he hopes to fill the position by April.

"You know we want to take the time to get it right. I don't want to by any means drag it on, but if takes a little longer to get the right person in here, then we'll do what it takes."

Shell says he does not know if Williams' son Bradley, who is assistant administrator, has applied for the job.
