Titan Cement: Public Hearing Today

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – A pair of public hearings is scheduled for Tuesday on the state's draft air permit for the proposed Carolina's Cement Plant.

The Division of Air Quality released its draft permit last month. The permit regulates the amount of pollutants the plant can emit.

It's now seeking comments that will be mulled over by the division's director. Once evaluated, Division of Air Quality spokesperson Tom Mather says the director will then have three choices.

"Whether to issue the permit as the draft permit has been written, or to issue the permit with modifications or to deny the permit."

If built, the New Hanover County cement plant will be the 4th largest in the country. Both Carolina's Cement and groups opposed to the plant have been urging residents to attend Tuesday's public hearings.
