Cmdr. Charles Springle

By Michelle Bliss

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina resident and Navy commander Charles Keith Springle, who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, was one of the five people killed by an Army sergeant at a military counseling clinic in Baghdad on Monday.

Commander Charles Keith Springle joined the Navy in 1988 and was trained as a social worker before serving as the director of Camp Lejeune's Community Counseling Center.

Last year, Springle worked with Bob Goodale from the Citizen-Soldier Support Program in Chapel Hill, giving talks on military culture and issues for service members returning home from war.

"I always looked forward to meeting him, you know--you're attracted to him. He always had a smile on his face and good things to say. He's certainly a military family, his son served in Iraq last year. I can remember talking about when he was looking forward to his return."

Goodale says Springle was engaged in his work and will be missed by his colleagues.

Commander Charles Keith Springle was 52 years old.
