Wilmington, NC – The state's beach management plan, which has been in the works for years, is making a round of public hearings before the final report is due this spring.
The North Carolina Department of Environment & Natural Resources is putting the plan together as a way to systematically care for the state's 326 miles of coastline and 19 active inlets.
The plan divides the coast into regions and recommends ways state and local government can tackle issues such as storm recovery, dredging and beach nourishment. Division of Coastal Management spokeswoman, Michelle Walker.
"And it's really I think going to help these different regions be able to get a good grasp on exactly what's happening in their particular region of the coast and how they can work together to keep the beaches healthy."
Walker says once the final plan is submitted in May, the Division of Coastal Management will talk with lawmakers and hopefully funding will follow.
