Wilmington, NC – Nineteen civilians graduate today from the Brunswick County Sheriff's new Citizens Academy program.

Modeled on similar programs across the country, the Citizens Academy gives residents an intimate glimpse of how crime is fought.

Deputy Joe Scoggins is the program coordinator. He says civilians who go through the program are more likely to serve as the eyes and ears of the sheriff's office and report suspicious behavior.

"We're making them more aware of how we work and what we need to see and, if they're reporting a crime, what they need to report."

Scoggins says the Citizens Academy does not offer formal law enforcement training but it does provide CPR certification.

He says he'll raise the cap on the size of the next class to 25 to accommodate increased demand.
