NH Co. Board Shake Up
By Catherine M. Welch
Wilmington, NC – The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners welcomed a pair of new board members Monday night and selected a new chair and vice chair.
No sooner were Ted Davis Jr. and Jason Thompson sworn in then they were voted in to become the chair and vice chair of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners.
New member Jonathan Barfield Jr. made both nominations.
Barfield says his number one priority is to get water and sewer out to Castle Hayne.
"There are so many people who live there that have inadequate water. I've talked to one lady who's had to replace her well three times. But it's also the least economically advantaged part of our county and it's a great place for us to build workforce housing so the people who work here and live here."
Thompson, who manages a land clearing company, says how the county handles its recycling and what it does with its trash are his top priorities.
"The tipping fee is way beyond what it costs to run our landfill because it's subsidizing WASTEC and the employees there of. So we're going to have to make real business like decisions in this economy, and where that falls is where that falls."
During their first New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meeting, Thompson and Barfield grappled with whether to rezone a patch of land off Carolina Beach Road to make way for a Cineplex.
