BrunsCo. Leaders Prepare for New Senior Center

By Peter Biello

Wilmington, NC – Brunswick County Commissioners have singled out a spot for the new Smithfield Township Senior Center, but aren't revealing their selection until they've negotiated the right price.

Brunswick County has $2.5 million to build a new senior center. Right now the county is negotiating to make sure that money will buy 12,000 square feet of recreation space for seniors near the coast.

Commissioners considered four sites, including two owned by private developers and one owned by Brunswick Community College.

Board Chairman Bill Sue says the county would like to build five new centers in as many years, and the county's coastal areas were made a priority, "because of the number of seniors there and also because of the conditions of the one that's there now. The one that's there is pretty well dilapidated and ineffective and not adequate to serve the seniors in that area."

The centers serve as places for senior citizens to socialize.

Sue says construction of the new senior center should be complete within six months.
