Dole Bill Aims at Fixing Army Barracks

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole has proposed legislation that changes how US Army bases are maintained.

Dole filed the legislation in reaction to photos of the neglected barracks at Ft. Bragg.

The photos, posted by the father of a Ft. Bragg solider, show peeling paint and drains clogged with sewage.

Ft. Bragg officials say the barracks were in the process of being fixed. And news of the photos prompted the Army to inspect barracks on other bases.

Dole's bill calls for replicating a program tested at Ft. Hood that creates a team designed specifically for maintenance that reports directly to the base commander.

"And it was we thought the fastest way to address this issue, was to call for expanding this program throughout the Army."

Dole says she will attach her bill to the Defense Authorization Bill that's currently making its way through Congress. She says she expects bi-partisan support.
