Cinematique Presents "Love & Friendship"

Monday-Friday, August 1-5, 7 pm

Wednesday, August 3, 4 pm

The Ruth & Bucky Stein Theatre

Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship is a sharp-tongued and riotously funny adaptation of young Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan, believed to have been written in the mid 1790s.

In this examination of 18th-century polite society set in the 1790s, beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon visits to the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colorful rumors about her dalliances. She decides to secure a husband for herself and a future for her eligible but reluctant daughter.

(Rated PG, Runtime: 94 minutes)

"Stillman doesn't upend the Austen formula, he burrows into it and embraces all its trappings. The snappy dialogue, meanwhile, rewards a finely tuned ear and will thrill all lovers of language." -Adam Graham, Detriot News

"Stillman has delivered a nonstop delight to thrill the existing Austen audience and crack up all the rest. He understands the story’s themes well. He explored the lives of young yuppies in love in the 1990s films 'Barcelona' and 'The Last Days of Disco,' taking us sightseeing through the preppy ecosphere, the world of Ralph Lauren, the WASP establishment sinking and grasping at fading privileges." -Colin Covert, Star Tribune
