Masculinity Caught in Cultural Tides: An Original Production

Masculinity Caught in Cultural Tides: An Original Production

UNCW Performance Studies/Communication Studies Presents “MASCULINITY CAUGHT IN CULTURAL TIDES: AN ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE PROJECT”
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
WHEN: Wednesday, April 17th @ 7:00 pm
WHERE: UNCW Campus - Leutze 125 (Studio Black Box)
This is an original show written and directed by Dr. Julie-Ann Scott-Pollock, created and performed by UNCW Performance Studies in the UNCW Communication Studies Department. The performance is based upon interviews surrounding gender identity, disability, and anxiety conducted from 2018-2023. The performance is the culminating project of an upper-level communication studies course focused on the intersections of research and performance across disciplines sponsored by UNCW's Quality Enhancement project focused on interdisciplinary teaching.
“I think anyone, regardless of their current understanding of gender and gender roles, will benefit from hearing about the wide ranges of experiences and perceptions of others. That is one of the most compelling ways to grow as a human being,” said Dr. Rick Olsen, UNCW’s Department of Communication Department Chair.
The goal of this show is to evoke empathy and understanding, not only from the audience, but from the student-performers as well. Students learn the ethics of embodying others' stories to create community understanding through the research method performance ethnography.
“I cannot express enough how appreciative I am to have this opportunity to participate in this course. Through the application of multidisciplinary performance ethnographic techniques, this experience has enabled me to engage in embodied performance and gain an understanding of theory to practice,” said Natalie Lippard, one of the students and performers in this show.
“As the director of Seahawks Advancing Interdisciplinary Learning, I am excited to see how students will apply what they learned from their interdisciplinary exploration of Communication Studies, Anthropology, and Theater in their performance. The production will be thought- provoking and generate fruitful conversations about intersectionality in all of its complexity,” said Dr. Beverley McGuire, Director of SAIL (Seahawks Advancing Interdisciplinary Learning).
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to stage these stories for an audience to reach different audiences than my current book project on the topic. I am excited for the opening night when years of research on a topic deeply important to my family can be brought to community audiences,” said Dr. Julie-Ann Scott-Pollock.
