Dance & Technology: Movies to Motion Capture

Dance & Technology: Movies to Motion Capture

A workshop for dancers, choreographers and directors curious about implementing new technology into their work. Lead by Mary John Frank, a New York-based director and choreographer. We'll discuss making work for the stage, films, XR and motion capture, what tools are most useful, and how to plan appropriately. Students will be given helpful questions and resources they can lean on while creating their respective works.

Mary John Frank's work blends contemporary dance, digital filmmaking, and physical theater to inform and energize audiences. She has also built immersive theater and Virtual Reality experiences and is exploring how VR and AI can contribute to and/or support artists working in dance and film.

Her career includes directing content for companies like New York City Ballet, Condé Nast, Disney, and Google Daydream and she has worked in production roles at film studios including Paramount Vantage and Warner Bros. Her choreography, films, and music video work has been featured on Vogue.com, Nowness, Afropunk, and Refinery 29, and has played at venues including Lincoln Center, the Hammer Museum, and Pioneer Works in Brooklyn.
