Wilmington, NC – Construction officially began today on the memorial commemorating the Wilmington race riots of 1898.
After a decade of planning, the 1898 Foundation, the Department of Transportation and the City of Wilmington began work on the 1898 Memorial.
It will sit on four parcels at the northern gateway to Downtown Wilmington. 1898 Foundation Co-chair Lethia Hankins says she's happy to see the project come to fruition.
It has a huge impact on our entire community. It's been a long, long labor of love, but we do see reality coming out of it. And it's a wonderful gesture on the part of the community.
The installation of the sculpture of 16 African paddles will be completed in February.
