In the absurdist dark comedy and social satire written and directed by Boots Riley, telemarketer Cassius Green struggles to make sales in an alternate reality of present-day Oakland, California, until he discovers a magical key that leads to professional success. But the upswing in Cassius' career raises serious red flags with his girlfriend Detroit, a performance artist and minimum-wage worker. As his friends and co-workers organize against corporate oppression, Cassius falls under the spell of Steve Lift, a cocaine-snorting CEO who offers him a salary beyond his wildest dreams.
From the critics:
Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You ambitiously pushes the envelope of the sci-fi and comedy genres for a wholly unique, refreshing and hilarious film. Molly Freeman, Screen Rant
Mr. Riley isn’t constructing yet another postmodern playhouse out of borrowings and allusions. He’s building a raft, and steering it straight into the foaming rapids of racism, economic injustice and cultural conflict. A.O. Scott, NYTimes
