WHQR's Emerging Voices

What is Emerging Voices?

Emerging Voices is a WHQR program that allows our local youth to voice their opinions and provides a space for them to share their unique perspectives. Those interested in sharing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions on air at WHQR are invited to write a commentary on a topic of their choice.

Emerging Voices Essay Guidelines:

  • Candidates must be between the ages of 12 and 17
  • Length: No longer than 500 words or 3:15 when read aloud
  • Quality: Thoughtful and well-written
  • Be sure to have your commentary proof read by a peer and/or mentor at least twice before you submit.
  • Submit your piece to opservices@whqr.org
  • Candidates that are selected will work with WHQR staff members to edit and revise their essays to ensure that it is radio-ready.

What can I write about?

Just about anything you’d like to write about! Consider these questions as you start to brainstorm and write.

  • What is your view on an event happening locally, nationally, or globally? Make your argument.
  • Do you want to enter into the ongoing conversation of a certain social issue?
  • What are your thoughts and opinions of that particular social issue?
  • Is your contribution to the conversation thoughtful and insightful?
  • Have you considered all sides of your selected topic?
  • Do you have an experience you wish to share?
  • How will you share that experience with your listeners? A dialogue? Storytelling? A poem?
  • What is the ultimate message that you would like to leave with your listeners?

You will hear from us if your commentary is chosen for broadcast. Don’t be discouraged if your commentary is not selected, and do feel free to resubmit again.

A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just begins
to live that day.
